Just What is it you do?

Being your basic quadruple A personality (do A types compete for their degree of A ness?), most people assumed I would go crazy being unemployed out here in the boonies. It was generally accepted by everyone, including me, that I would quickly abandon this retired nonsense and start some frantic new venture.

Several years have passed and it just didn't happen. All this business about "if I won the lottery I would keep on working because I wouldn't know what to do with myself" is malarkey, probably disseminated by some employers' conspiracy to keep their workers docile. By the way, we did not win a lottery. If you are really interested in the dull details, click here.

Boredom is not a problem.

I still spend a lot of time checking out cool new computer technology and writing programs, but now I can do it just for fun. Just playing with the net has been a fascinating experience and trying to keep on top of the latest software development techniques could be a full time job in itself.

We are lucky enough to live in what is certainly one version of paradise and that provides lots of distractions. In the winter I ski a lot of course and in the summer there is mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking, swimming and lots of other stuff. Of course being able to play with the kids or whip out to the lake on the spur of the moment is just great.

Monitoring our investments is the closest thing we have to real work but it only requires a modest amount of time, mainly reading. In fact whether it be on the net, magazines or books, reading in general is a primary time consumer.

Does this mean I will remain 'retired' for the rest of my days? Not necessarily, although I did give up selling one of my programs, Wilbur, when it threatened to turn into a job. I may drift in to some various ventures at some point, but hopefully with out the frenetic pace of my previous existence and probably at no time soon. I am peripherally involved with a company run by some friends, but the goal is to always keep the clocks on Fernie Proper Time.
